Sweely Estate’s Wolftown White

December Sweet Wine Selection

Sweely Estate

Wolftown White, NV

Recently in the news (more about that below) Sweely Estate Winery is situated in the foothills of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison, Virginia. The vineyard began in 2004, just after the historic Weaver farm was purchased by the Sweely Family.

The family had a vision for the property: plant imported French vines; make world-class wine; share their passions for great food, wine and art in an old-world styled hospitality center; provide guests with educational opportunities in these areas; and last, but clearly not least, create an elegant event facility with outdoor areas and breathtaking views.  The winery is all of that vision and more, working with French born winemaker Frantz Ventre Sweely quickly established itself as a destination winery.

Back in November, The Washington Post broke the story that America Online founder Steve Case and his wife, Jean, are purchasing the estate winery.  According to Dave McIntyre, “The deal was signed in July but was kept on the Q-T because final regulatory approvals are still pending”. It is anticipate the deal may close before the end of this month.

Wolftown is a secondary label produced by Sweely Estate.  Clearly one of my favorite label designs in all of Virginia wine the spooky wolf eyes call to me from the bottle. The Wolftown White is a non-vintage wine made of 65% Chardonnay and 35% Vidal.  The resultant wine has 1.8% residual sugar but much of that sweetness is disguised by the lemongrass notes of the more dominant Chardonnay.

Stainless steel fermentation provides a crisp clean finish with the sweetness subtly playing in the rear of the palate.  Pair with white cheese, spicy foods or enjoy as an aperitif.
