Just as there are some friends who would never dream of accepting just a handshake as a greeting, some wines grab you with both hands and engage you in a much more engaging hello hug. Afton Mountain Vineyards Mountain Red is just such a wine, overly generous throughout its fruit filled flavor profile.
In the glass, Afton Mountain Vineyards Mountain Red is a bold crimson brick color. The full bodied nose includes red cherry and licorice notes as well as leathery undertones.
The bright well balanced attack includes rose pedal notes leading to an expansive midpalate filled with blueberries, raspberries and rhubarb.
The smooth finish lingers nicely with delightful suggestions of caramelized cherries, strawberries and leather notes.
This non vintage product is a most versatile pairing wine. Gentle enough to pair with grilled chicken but with depth to provide a nice complement to marbleized steak.
While much more than just a pizza and spaghetti red, I found this wine paired exquisitely well with spicy baked spaghetti casserole. The well structured wine complemented the different cheeses throughout the casserole. .
Drinking very well now, I anticipate a slight increase in complexity with an additional six months of proper cellaring.
