Wines labeled Bordeaux must be made from grapes grown in the Bordeaux region of France. In addition, French law dictates that only six grapes may be included in the blend. The six Bordeaux grapes are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère.
American winemakers wishing to have the prestige of the Bordeaux title created the Meritage (pronounced like heritage) Society. To label a wine as a Meritage, one must use at least two of the classic Bordeaux grapes and pay a royalty to the Meritage Society.
